Detectives in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County, have arrested a man suspected of sodomising his minor stepchild, who later died after being rushed to hospital.

The suspect, identified as Erick Wamalwa Namukana, alias Funje, was arrested in the Shimo la Tewa area of Milimani, Kiminini Sub-County, after allegedly going into hiding following the incident.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said preliminary investigations indicated that the alleged sexual assault occurred between March 2 and March 3, 2026.

The minor was initially taken to Bikeke Health Centre for treatment before being referred to Kijana Wamalwa Referral Hospital, where the child was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival.

According to the DCI, the suspect fled to an unknown destination after the incident, prompting detectives to intensify investigations and pursue leads to locate him.

Investigators eventually traced and arrested him in the Shimo la Tewa area of Milimani. He was subsequently escorted to the DCI Kiminini offices, where detectives began processing him ahead of his expected arraignment at Kitale Law Courts.

The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the child's death. The DCI statement did not provide the child's exact age, identity or further medical details regarding the death.

The arrest marks a development in the investigation, although the allegations against the suspect have yet to be determined by a court. He remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty through the judicial process.

The DCI extended its condolences to the bereaved family and friends, reiterating its commitment to protecting children from sexual violence, investigating offences against minors and pursuing justice in accordance with the law.

The agency also urged members of the public to share information about criminal activities through its toll-free number, 0800 722 203, or WhatsApp line, 0709 570 000. The DCI said reports could be made anonymously.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned at Kitale Law Courts as investigations into the case continue.
