Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has confirmed the death of all five quintuplets born at Thika Level Five Hospital and transferred to KNH for specialised care.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 16, KNH said the babies were born at an extremely premature gestational age of 25 weeks, with critically low birth weights.
The hospital said the newborns faced significant clinical challenges from the time of admission and were placed under the care of a multidisciplinary neonatal team.
Despite dedicated efforts by medical teams and specialised care, all five babies succumbed.
Mercy Kanini made headlines after delivering the five babies through normal delivery at Thika Level Five Hospital.
Her husband, Evans Nyamhanga, had described the birth of the five babies as a miracle.
Nyamhanga had appealed for financial support to help the family meet the costs associated with caring for the premature infants.
The premature babies had been transferred to KNH for specialised neonatal care because of their extremely low birth weights.
