Tana River County Commissioner Mbogai Rioba has issued a stern warning to local leaders against inciting ethnic hatred and promoting violence in their political campaigns. Speaking at a security meeting held in Kurawa sub-location within Garsen constituency, Rioba emphasized that the government is committed to taking decisive action against any individuals found guilty of incitement, irrespective of their social or political status. The commissioner urged politicians and opinion leaders to conduct their campaigns peacefully, taking into account the diverse ethnic composition of the communities they represent.
Rioba's remarks come at a critical time as the country gears up for the upcoming general elections, a period often marked by heightened political tensions and potential for unrest. He specifically called on the youth to resist manipulation by unscrupulous politicians and ethnic agitators who might exploit them to disrupt the peace and stability of the county. "We urge the youths to resist being used by rogue politicians and ethnic demagogues to disrupt peace and tranquility in the county," he stated.
In a move aimed at bolstering security in the region, Rioba announced that the government has finalized plans to construct a police station on Miticharaka Island in Garsen constituency. This development is expected to enhance law enforcement capabilities and ensure a safer environment as the election period approaches. The presence of a police station in the area is seen as a proactive measure to deter criminal activities and maintain order.
The commissioner's assurance is timely, given recent reports suggesting the resurgence of outlawed groups and the alleged recruitment of youth into these factions. Rioba urged residents of Miticharaka to live in harmony and cooperate with government authorities by reporting any suspicious activities or individuals. He stressed that the government would not tolerate any attempts by radicalized youth to disrupt the peace in the area.
Residents have expressed concerns over the reemergence of criminal elements and are calling on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to initiate thorough investigations in Miticharaka. The community's appeal underscores the urgency for law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to identify and neutralize potential threats to security.
The government's proactive stance, as articulated by Commissioner Rioba, reflects its commitment to safeguarding peace and stability in Tana River County during this politically sensitive period.
