Eldoret traders and service providers are experiencing increased business as Mashujaa Day celebrations take place at Kipchoge Keino Stadium on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, bringing visitors to the city and boosting demand for transport, food and accommodation. The national event is providing a timely economic boost to businesses in Uasin Gishu County as operators seek to turn the influx of visitors into higher earnings
Taxi operators are among those benefiting from the increased movement of visitors ahead of the celebrations. Walter Nixon, a local taxi operator, told People Daily that his earnings had improved during a period when business would ordinarily be slow, with daily returns rising to between KSh 3,000 and KSh 5,000 after expenses, depending on demand.
The increased customer traffic is also creating opportunities for restaurant owners, fish traders and other food vendors preparing to serve residents and visitors attending the national event. Businesses in these sectors are hoping the additional demand will translate into stronger sales as more people gather in the city for the celebrations
Hotels and other accommodation providers have also reported increased demand, with some facilities recording high occupancy as visitors arrive from different parts of the country. The activity is extending the economic benefits beyond the stadium to businesses providing accommodation, meals and other services to guests.
Preparations at Kipchoge Keino Stadium have created additional opportunities for businesses operating near the venue. Mark Injendi Shalo, a car wash operator, told local media that his daily customer numbers had increased from three to between eight and nine since construction activities began.
The increase in activity highlights how major national events can stimulate local commerce through visitor spending, construction-related demand and the need for additional services. For small businesses that depend on daily sales, even a temporary rise in customers can provide extra income and help meet operating expenses.
However, traders will need to sustain the momentum after the celebrations end. A short-term increase in customer numbers does not necessarily translate into lasting growth, particularly for businesses facing high operating costs and consumers whose spending remains constrained by the cost of living.
Eldoret's elevation to city status in August 2024 and its selection to host Mashujaa Day have also raised expectations about its potential to attract investment, tourism and major sporting events. Residents and business operators hope improvements to local infrastructure, including the stadium, will support more regular commercial activity
The immediate test for Eldoret's traders will be whether the spending generated by Mashujaa Day continues after visitors leave. Future sporting competitions, tourism activity and other major events could provide further opportunities for businesses to build on the momentum.
