Several traders at Garissa Lodge Market in Kisumu City are counting losses following an early morning fire that destroyed a number of market shades.
The fire is believed to have started at the Kisumu County Hospital incinerator before spreading to one of the market’s mabati structures.
Alarmed by thick smoke, traders rushed to the scene and managed to salvage some of their goods as they waited for the Kisumu County fire response team to arrive.
Boaz Rombo from the Kisumu Fire Department said about seven market shades were affected by the blaze.
He said firefighters managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other sections of the market, helping to minimise the extent of the damage.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
