Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following the opening of disciplinary proceedings over an incident reported on October 7, 2026.

The suspension will remain in place as the case awaits a final verdict, with the federation confirming that the proceedings have been classified as urgent.

In an official statement issued on October 9, the federation said its Non-Professional Section had initiated disciplinary proceedings against the Portugal captain to investigate the possible disciplinary implications of the reported incident.

“The initiation of disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo, by deliberation of the Non-Professional Section, of October 9, 2026, with the purpose of the investigation of any disciplinary relevance of the facts participated on October 7,” the statement read.

The federation added that, beyond the automatic preventive suspension Ronaldo had been subject to until the case was formally established, a further non-automatic preventive suspension had been imposed.

It also confirmed that the case would be handled urgently, although the statement did not specify when a final decision would be delivered or what punishment the player could face if found responsible for a disciplinary offence.

The development follows Ronaldo's public apology over his departure from Portugal's national team camp, during which he reportedly suggested that disciplinary action against him would be appropriate.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has also continued to pursue the milestone of 1,000 career goals, with his latest strike taking his tally to 980 for club and country.

On Friday, October 9, Ronaldo scored on his return to action for Al-Nassr, opening the scoring in the 23rd minute of their 3-0 victory over Diriyah Club in the Saudi Pro League.

He reacted quickest to a rebound after goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah parried Kingsley Coman’s effort, firing home from close range.

The goal left the 41-year-old just 20 strikes short of the 1,000-goal landmark, adding another milestone to a career that has included spells at Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr.

The victory also helped Al-Nassr maintain their push for the Saudi Pro League title, with Samu Costa and Coman scoring the other goals.

Ronaldo’s club return comes as the Portuguese Football Federation considers the consequences of his departure from the national team camp.

Although the disciplinary case remains unresolved, his latest performance demonstrates that the dispute has not interrupted his immediate contribution to Al-Nassr.

The federation is yet to announce a final verdict, leaving Ronaldo’s international future subject to the outcome of the proceedings.
