Security officials in Busia County have warned illegal groups operating in the area to stop their activities or face action from security agencies.

The warning comes after renewed clashes between police and members of a suspected criminal group in Marachi, on the outskirts of Busia town.

Police reportedly exchanged fire with members of the group, leading to gunshots being heard in the area.

Speaking during a peace meeting held in Marachi following the incident, Busia County Police Commander Johnstone Lang’at said security agencies would continue with operations until the group is brought under control.

Lang’at said the crackdown would also be sustained as the country prepares for next year’s General Election.

On his part, Busia County Commissioner Stephen Orinde urged residents to work with security agencies by sharing information that could help identify suspected criminals operating in the area.

The security officials said no illegal group would be allowed to disrupt peace or continue carrying out criminal activities in the county.

Residents who attended the meeting, including Faria Jele and Stephen Malingu, called for action against the groups, saying their activities had disrupted businesses and affected residents’ daily lives.

Security agencies have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities to maintain peace in Marachi and other parts of Busia County.
