Defending champions Gor Mahia suffered their first defeat of the 2026/27 SportPesa League season after KCB secured a 2-1 victory at Moi Stadium in Embu on Sunday, November 1, ending K’Ogalo’s perfect start to the campaign.

The Bankers delivered a clinical performance to collect all three points against the league leaders, scoring twice in the opening half before holding on to their advantage despite being reduced to ten men in the closing stages.

Gor Mahia had entered the fifth-round encounter with maximum points from their opening four matches, having defeated Murang’a Seal, APS Bomet, Kakamega Homeboyz and Bandari to establish themselves at the top of the standings.

However, Robert Matano’s charges proved a difficult test for Charles Akonnor’s side, capitalising on defensive mistakes to hand the champions their first setback of the season.

KCB broke the deadlock in the 20th minute through Assis Mambote, who reacted quickest after a misdirected effort from Paul Kinyanjui fell into his path before firing past goalkeeper Kevin Omondi.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Richard Omondi took advantage of another defensive lapse by Gor Mahia. A poorly executed clearance by Paul Ochuoga fell into Omondi’s path, allowing the KCB forward to drive a low effort beyond the goalkeeper and make it 2-0.

Gor Mahia responded six minutes later after a penalty was awarded when a clearance from Mambote struck midfielder Alpha Onyango inside the penalty area.

Onyango stepped up to take the spot-kick and converted to reduce the deficit to 2-1, giving the champions a route back into the contest before half-time.

The second half saw Gor Mahia push forward in search of an equaliser, with Onyango coming close to restoring parity through a long-range effort that struck the woodwork.

KCB also threatened to extend their advantage, with Franck Nduwimana forcing another save from Omondi with a powerful effort from close range. Paul Kinyanjui subsequently missed an opportunity to put the game beyond Gor Mahia after finding himself through on goal.

The Bankers were dealt a setback in the 86th minute when defender Baron Ochieng received a second yellow card following an altercation involving Gor Mahia's Ebenezer Assifuah, leaving the visitors to defend their lead with ten players.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Matano's side maintained their defensive organisation to see out the remaining minutes and secure a significant victory against the reigning champions.

The result lifted KCB to second place with 10 points from five matches, reducing the gap at the top to two points, while Gor Mahia remained leaders with 12 points.

KCB's victory also ended a five-match unbeaten run against Gor Mahia in league meetings, having previously recorded three wins and two draws in their last five encounters.

The defeat presents an early test for Akonnor's side as they seek to defend their league title, while KCB will take confidence from a result that puts them firmly in the title conversation after five rounds of the campaign.
