Arsenal moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League after ending their 14-year wait for a league victory at Anfield with a 1-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute, helping Mikel Arteta’s side secure a significant away victory that ended a long-standing struggle against Liverpool at their home ground.
The result took Arsenal to 24 points from nine matches, opening a three-point gap over second-placed Manchester City, who suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Brighton on Saturday. Liverpool remained fifth on 15 points, nine behind the league leaders.
Arsenal had not won a Premier League match at Anfield since September 2012, when they secured a 2-0 victory under former manager Arsene Wenger.
Sunday’s result ended a run of 13 consecutive league visits without a win, comprising five draws and eight defeats.
Havertz’s goal came after Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker misplaced a pass while attempting to play out from the back. Arsenal capitalised on the error, with Martin Odegaard helping initiate the attacking move before Noni Madueke and Declan Rice combined down the right.
Rice delivered a low cross across the penalty area, which Havertz met at the far post to give the visitors the lead.
Liverpool responded with increased attacking pressure and came close to equalising before half-time.
Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar with a free-kick, while Alexis Mac Allister missed a promising opportunity after heading Milos Kerkez’s delivery over the goal from close range.
The hosts also appealed for a penalty after Jurrien Timber appeared to pull Alexander Isak’s shirt as the Liverpool forward attempted to reach a cross inside the box. However, the officials did not award a spot-kick.
Despite Liverpool’s attempts to find an equaliser, Arsenal maintained their advantage after the break, defending with discipline to prevent the hosts from converting their pressure into a goal.
The Gunners also threatened to extend their lead, with Alisson producing an important save to deny Christos Tzolis in the second half.
Speaking after the match, Arteta highlighted the significance of finally securing a victory at Anfield after years of unsuccessful visits.
“It feels better as a manager, because it’s been such a long time. We really needed it,” he said.
The Arsenal manager also praised his players for navigating difficult periods during the contest, particularly against a Liverpool side that created several opportunities before the interval.
The victory strengthens Arsenal’s position in the title race as they seek to defend their Premier League crown, while ending one of the longest-standing obstacles in their recent league meetings with Liverpool.
Arsenal will next face Hull City on November 7 as they look to maintain their advantage at the summit.
