USIU-Africa emerged as one of the standout teams at the university county taekwondo competitions held at the United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) on Saturday, October 17, 2026, with athletes from five universities competing for places at the upcoming regional championships in Nakuru.
The competition brought together participants from USIU-Africa, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kenyatta University, St. Paul’s University and Mount Kenya University, who competed for medals in the men’s and women’s categories.
USIU-Africa topped the men’s medal standings with four gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals. JKUAT followed with two gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals, while Kenyatta University collected two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
In the women’s competition, USIU-Africa also led the standings with four gold medals, two silver and two bronze medals. Kenyatta University finished with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals, while JKUAT claimed one gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Mount Kenya University also secured medals in both the men’s and women’s categories, while St. Paul’s University registered a bronze medal in the men’s competition.
Among the athletes who took part was USIU-Africa’s Cornelius Wahome, who expressed excitement at competing in the tournament and earning a bronze medal in the men’s under-63kg category.
Wahome said the achievement was encouraging after the time and effort the team had invested in training ahead of the competition. He explained that the athletes had been training consistently to improve their techniques, fitness and readiness for the matches.
For Wahome, the medal was a rewarding outcome of the preparations, while the competition also offered an opportunity to measure his progress against opponents from other universities.
The tournament provided a platform for university athletes to gain experience, test their skills and compete in a structured sporting environment as they pursued qualification for the next stage.
Attention now shifts to the regional championships in Nakuru, where qualifying athletes will have an opportunity to represent their institutions against competitors from other parts of the region.
With five universities participating in the county contest, the event marked an important step in the university taekwondo calendar as teams look to build on their performances and prepare for the regional challenge.
