The United States Embassy in Nairobi will remain closed on Monday, October 12, 2026, in observance of Columbus Day, according to a notice issued by the embassy.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Friday, October 9, the embassy informed the public of the planned closure, advising those who may need its services to take note of the date.
The closure means members of the public who intend to visit the embassy for consular services or other official business should make the necessary arrangements ahead of Monday. Normal operations are expected to resume after the holiday, although the embassy has not provided further details on its reopening schedule in the notice.
The announcement is particularly important for people planning to access services such as visa-related assistance, passport services for American citizens and other consular matters. Those with appointments or pending requests are encouraged to check official embassy communication channels for any additional guidance that may affect their plans.
Columbus Day is a public holiday in the United States observed annually on the second Monday of October. It commemorates Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas in 1492. The holiday is recognised by the US federal government, and many federal offices close in observance.
In recent years, the holiday has also become a subject of debate in the United States, with several states and local governments observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of, or alongside, Columbus Day. The alternative observance recognises the history, cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples, as well as the impact of European colonisation on their communities.
Although the holiday is observed in the United States, its effects can also be felt at American diplomatic missions abroad, including the US Embassy in Nairobi, when they suspend routine operations.
The embassy’s notice serves as a reminder to Kenyan residents, American citizens living in the country and other visitors who rely on its services to confirm operating arrangements before travelling to its premises.
Members of the public can follow the U.S. Embassy Nairobi’s official communication channels for updates on services, appointments and any further announcements relating to the closure.
The embassy has not announced any additional changes to its operations in the notice, which specifically states that it will be closed on October 12 in observance of Columbus Day.
