Two suspects have been arrested after detectives seized 898 rolls of bhang and three litres of chang’aa in separate anti-narcotics operations in Juja, Kiambu County, and Orera, Homa Bay County.
The operations targeted suspected drug peddling in the two areas, with the Homa Bay raid following public complaints about alleged trafficking near Orera Comprehensive School.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), detectives arrested a 24-year-old woman, Ann Wanjiku Njoki, at Juja Matatu Stage after officers from Juja Police Station found her in possession of 800 rolls of bhang.
The officers seized the suspected narcotics and took the woman into custody for processing ahead of her arraignment in court.
In a separate operation in Orera, Rachuonyo East Sub-County, detectives arrested a 33-year-old man identified as Fredrick Dunga, also known by the aliases Ofisa and Babu.
The operation was conducted by detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB), drawn from Homa Bay and Migori, who raided the suspect's home following complaints from members of the public about alleged drug trafficking in the vicinity of Orera Comprehensive School.
A search of the premises led to the recovery of 98 rolls of bhang concealed inside a cup. Detectives also seized three litres of chang'aa, an illicit alcoholic brew.
Dunga was subsequently escorted to Homa Bay Police Station for processing ahead of his expected arraignment in court.
The two operations resulted in the recovery of 898 rolls of bhang and three litres of chang'aa, according to the DCI. The agency did not disclose the estimated street value of the seized substances or indicate whether investigators were pursuing additional suspects in connection with the cases.
The reported activity near Orera Comprehensive School places the issue of drug trafficking close to a learning institution, raising concerns about the potential exposure of children and young people to narcotic substances and illicit alcohol.
The arrests also highlight the role of public information in directing law enforcement operations, with the DCI saying the Orera raid followed complaints about suspected trafficking in the area.
The agency reiterated its commitment to pursuing people suspected of involvement in the illicit drug trade and protecting communities from the dangers associated with narcotic drugs and illicit brews.
Members of the public with information about suspected criminal activity can report anonymously through the DCI's toll-free number, 0800 722 203, or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
