South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has made changes to his caretaker government, removing Health Minister John Gai Yoh only three days after he assumed the position.

Gai Yoh was appointed on September 28 and took over the ministry on September 30.

He was later replaced by Dak Duop Bichiok in a decree announced on state broadcaster South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC).

Kiir also made changes within the National Security Service (NSS), dropping General Napoleon Adok Gai from his position as deputy director-general of the Internal Security Bureau.

He was replaced by General Apiu Goch Dut, who was promoted from major general to general as part of the changes.

Apiu previously served as managing director of Sudd Investment, a South Sudanese company associated with the NSS and its interests in the oil and security sectors.

The reshuffle comes shortly after Kiir dissolved the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity on September 22.

The move left the country under a caretaker administration as it prepares for elections set for December 22, 2026.

Kiir will continue exercising presidential powers during the electoral period until a new president is sworn in.

The decrees did not state whether the changes involving the Health Ministry and the NSS were connected.

Gai Yoh has held several senior positions in government, including education minister and presidential adviser on education. He also previously served as South Sudan's ambassador to Turkey.

He is currently heading the secretariat overseeing a two-week Inter-Party Dialogue on election-related issues in Juba.

Bichiok, who takes over the Health Ministry, previously served as minister of public service and human resource development in the transitional government.

The presidential order did not explain why Gai Yoh was removed.
