Security and infrastructure development have taken centre stage as the Mashujaa Day Thematic Week officially kicked off in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, ahead of the national celebrations scheduled for October 20, 2026.
Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo said improved security was essential to attracting investment, boosting trade and accelerating economic growth, particularly in areas that have previously experienced insecurity.
Speaking during the opening of the thematic week on Wednesday, October 14, Omollo noted that peace and stability create an environment where businesses can thrive, communities can engage in productive activities and infrastructure projects can deliver lasting benefits.
He cited improvements in security across the North Rift, saying communities were gradually returning to normal life, children were going back to school and markets were reopening. He said the progress demonstrated the close relationship between security, livelihoods and long-term economic development.
The PS also highlighted ongoing road infrastructure development in the Kerio Valley, particularly the Kilang’ata-Tot-Kopasi and Barpello-Tot-Sigor-Marich road corridors.
According to Omollo, the projects are intended to improve connectivity, ease the movement of people and goods, and link communities to markets and essential services. He stressed that infrastructure investments must be supported by adequate security to stimulate commerce, expand economic opportunities and improve living standards.
On police reforms, Omollo underscored the need to strengthen the National Police Service through recruitment, improved officers’ welfare, training, modern equipment and technology. He said a professional, adequately equipped and motivated police service was critical to effective security operations and public confidence.
During a public engagement, residents raised concerns about insecurity in Langas Ward, Eldoret, citing robberies, house break-ins and physical attacks. Omollo called for closer cooperation between police officers, local institutions, landlords and residents to address the challenges.
He further emphasised timely information sharing, community participation and collaboration across the justice system to prevent crime and ensure reported cases are handled effectively.
The discussions also addressed gender-based violence and femicide, with participants calling for accountability, timely investigations, proper handling of criminal cases and increased community awareness. They also highlighted the need to address social and economic challenges that increase vulnerability and improve access to support services.
Omollo said sustainable development depended on creating a safe environment where people could live, work, learn and invest without fear, urging communities to work closely with security agencies to identify and address threats.
The Mashujaa Day Thematic Week is also highlighting the role of sports infrastructure in national development, talent development, employment creation and local economic activity. Facilities such as Kipchoge Keino Stadium, Kapseret Stadium and Kamariny Stadium were cited as examples of the importance of investing in sports facilities that support athletes and create opportunities for surrounding communities.
The week’s activities form part of the preparations for the national Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret on October 20. The annual event provides an opportunity to showcase development initiatives, bring public services closer to citizens and recognise the contributions of individuals and communities to national progress.
