Safaricom and smartphone manufacturer TECNO have partnered to make 5G-enabled devices more affordable in Kenya, targeting consumers and small businesses that increasingly depend on mobile technology to run their operations.
The initiative includes a promotional price reduction on TECNO’s POVA Curve 2 5G smartphone, which is available for Sh44,999, down from its usual retail price of Sh55,999. The Sh11,000 discount is scheduled to run until October 31, 2026.
TECNO Kenya Head of Marketing Mildred Agoya said the initiative aims to widen access to 5G technology and help bridge the gap between network expansion and consumers’ ability to purchase compatible devices.
The partnership comes as businesses increasingly use digital platforms to advertise products, communicate with customers, receive orders and manage transactions. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), reliable mobile connectivity can support online sales, digital payments and day-to-day business communication.
However, access to 5G services depends on more than network coverage. Consumers also need compatible handsets, making device prices an important consideration as telecommunications providers expand next-generation connectivity.
The discount is intended to lower the upfront cost of upgrading to a 5G smartphone. For small businesses that rely on mobile devices for customer engagement and digital operations, the reduced price could make the technology more accessible, although the actual benefits will depend on network availability, usage needs and affordability.
The POVA Curve 2 5G is being promoted as a device for users who require mobile connectivity for work and everyday activities. Customers should confirm the promotional price, participating outlets and applicable terms with Safaricom or TECNO before purchasing.
The partnership also reflects the commercial relationship between telecommunications providers and handset manufacturers, whose efforts to expand 5G adoption depend on both network infrastructure and the availability of compatible devices.
For SMEs, wider access to faster mobile connectivity could create more opportunities to use digital tools and reach customers online. However, the extent of those gains will depend on the cost of devices and data, as well as the availability of useful digital services.
With the promotion due to end on October 31, consumers considering an upgrade have a limited period to access the advertised price. The longer-term impact will depend on whether more affordable 5G devices become available beyond the promotional period.
