Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery after suffering an injury in training, the club confirmed.

The 26-year-old missed Saturday’s 5–1 win over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge while he underwent medical assessments.

Chelsea says those assessments led to surgery and James has already started rehabilitation at Cobham under the club’s medical department. The club has not announced a return date.

The injury comes after James had recently returned to the Chelsea side. His absence from the Bournemouth match was the first sign that something was wrong and the subsequent announcement confirms the setback required an operation.

Though Chelsea described the procedure as minor, that wording alone does not establish how long he will be out. Until the club provides a timetable, any estimate of his return remains uncertain.

James’s latest setback also revives a familiar concern for Chelsea supporters. A graduate of the club’s academy, he made his first-team debut in 2019 and quickly became a regular at right-back, valued for his pace, strength and ability to contribute in attack.

He was named captain in August 2023. Chelsea’s own career profile records interruptions from both knee and hamstring problems: a knee injury in 2022 ruled him out of that year’s World Cup, while recurring hamstring trouble later led to surgery in December 2023.

Those injuries have limited his availability at times, but James has continued to make an impact when fit. He can play at right-back or wing-back and has also featured in midfield. His leadership and versatility make his absence a sporting loss as Chelsea work out how to cover for their captain.

For now, the confirmed news is limited to the surgery was successful, rehabilitation has begun and Chelsea says it will support him through his recovery.

The club has not specified the nature of the knee injury or when James might return to training or match action. His progress through rehabilitation should provide a clearer indication of the recovery period.
