Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will undergo surgery after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during the French side’s 4-2 victory over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, October 20.

PSG confirmed the injury in a medical update on Wednesday, October 21, stating that the Georgian international would undergo an operation in the coming days.

The club did not provide a recovery timeline for the 25-year-old, whose injury is a major setback as the reigning European champions pursue further success in the competition.

Kvaratskhelia sustained the injury during the second half of the match at the Parc des Princes in Paris. He was forced off shortly before the hour mark after being unable to put weight on his right leg, requiring assistance to leave the pitch.

The diagnosis confirmed fears that the winger had suffered a serious knee injury. An ACL rupture typically requires surgery and an extended rehabilitation period, although the precise length of his absence will depend on his treatment and recovery.

The injury comes at a crucial stage of the Champions League campaign, with PSG having secured three consecutive victories in the league phase. His absence will leave coach Luis Enrique without one of his attacking options as the club prepares for its upcoming fixtures.

Kvaratskhelia has been an important figure in PSG’s attack since joining the club from Napoli in January 2025. His pace, dribbling and ability to create scoring opportunities have made him a key option in the wide attacking positions.

PSG’s 4-2 win over Barcelona was also overshadowed by injuries to two other first-team players, Ousmane Dembélé and captain Marquinhos.

Dembélé sustained an injury to his left thigh, while Marquinhos suffered an injury to his right thigh. According to the club’s medical update, both players will remain under treatment over the coming weeks.

The three injuries present a selection challenge for Luis Enrique, particularly with European and domestic commitments continuing during the season. However, PSG have not announced specific return dates for any of the injured players.

Despite the setbacks, PSG claimed all three points against Barcelona in a six-goal encounter that strengthened their position in the Champions League league phase.

The immediate focus for the club will now be Kvaratskhelia’s surgery and rehabilitation, with further information about his recovery expected as his treatment progresses.
