Police officers have intercepted a motorcycle ferrying 100 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis sativa along the Busia–Mumias Highway in Kakamega County, in a fresh operation highlighting renewed efforts by security agencies to combat drug trafficking in the country.
The seizure was made on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, when officers from Matungu Police Station, while conducting routine patrols at Matungu Trading Centre, intercepted the motorcycle and discovered the narcotics.
The rider was arrested and is being held at Matungu Police Station pending arraignment in court. The motorcycle and the recovered cannabis have also been impounded and detained at the station as exhibits to support investigations and any subsequent prosecution.
The National Police Service says it remains committed to dismantling drug trafficking networks and preventing illegal substances from reaching communities across the country.
The latest interception comes amid renewed efforts by security agencies to intensify the fight against illicit drugs and narcotics, which continue to pose concerns over public health, crime and the safety of young people.
The use of motorcycles to transport suspected narcotics also highlights the importance of routine patrols and intelligence-led operations along major highways and trading centres that may be exploited by traffickers to move illegal consignments between counties and across borders.
Kakamega County’s proximity to the Busia border region makes vigilance along transport routes particularly important in efforts to disrupt the movement of illegal substances.
However, investigations will be required to establish the origin and intended destination of the seized consignment, as well as whether the arrested suspect was acting alone or as part of a wider trafficking network.
The National Police Service has urged members of the public to support the anti-drug campaign by sharing credible information with the nearest police station or through the toll-free emergency services number.
Police say cooperation between law enforcement agencies and local communities remains essential in identifying suspected trafficking activities, tracing suppliers and distributors, and preventing illegal drugs from circulating in residential areas and learning institutions.
The seizure adds to ongoing law enforcement efforts to curb drug trafficking and strengthen public safety. Authorities are expected to pursue investigations into the consignment as the suspect awaits arraignment.
The National Police Service has reiterated that the fight against narcotics requires sustained enforcement, public vigilance and cooperation from communities to help dismantle networks involved in the trade.
