Police in Kisii South Sub-County have recovered eight cows suspected to have been stolen from different homesteads, following an operation in Riobara Sub-location, Sameta Sub-County, Kisii County.
The recovery was conducted on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at around 8.15pm, under the leadership of Kerina Police Station Officer Commanding Station (OCS).
He was accompanied by Kisii South Sub-County Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) Paul Kibei and the Crime Intelligence and Prevention Unit (CIPU) Commander.
According to a police report, the eight cows were recovered from the homestead of Irene Kinanga, located near Igare Shopping Centre in Riobara Sub-location.
The operation followed information provided by two suspects who had been arrested earlier in the morning in Asumbi, Homa Bay County, by the area chief and assistant chief.
The information provided by the suspects reportedly led officers to the homestead where the animals were found, prompting the recovery operation as police intensified efforts to trace livestock suspected to have been stolen from different parts of the region.
One of the recovered cows was positively identified by Aska Nyarangi, a resident of Mwondieki Village in Nyamare area, Riana Location, Riana Division, Kisii South Sub-County.
Nyarangi told police that the animal had been stolen from her homestead on Friday night, October 9, 2026.
Two other cows have also been positively identified by their respective owners, bringing the number of animals whose ownership has been established to three.
Police are, however, yet to identify the owners of the remaining five cows.
The recovery is expected to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the suspected thefts and determining whether the animals were taken from different homesteads across Kisii County or neighbouring areas.
Police have secured the recovered animals at Kerina Police Station as investigations continue.
The animals have been booked under Occurrence Book reference number OB 16/10/10/2026.
Officers are continuing with efforts to trace the rightful owners of the five unidentified cows and establish the circumstances under which the livestock came to be in the homestead where they were recovered.
The two suspects arrested in Asumbi are expected to assist investigators as inquiries into the suspected livestock theft continue.
Further action will depend on the outcome of the investigations and the evidence gathered by police.
Residents who have lost cattle are encouraged to report the cases to the relevant police stations and provide identifying details to help establish ownership of the recovered animals.
