The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has announced its intention to field candidates for all elective positions in Kilifi County, a region it considers one of its strongholds. This move comes as a direct response to statements made by Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, suggesting that his party, Pamoja African Alliance (PAA), would be responsible for clearing candidates under the Azimio la Umoja umbrella.
Mr. Teddy Mwambie, the Chair of the Kilifi County ODM Coordinating Committee, firmly addressed these claims, stating, “Contrary to information attributed to Mr. Kingi, I wish to clarify that ODM will be fielding candidates in all electoral positions across the Coast Region and not just in Kilifi County.” He emphasized that ODM remains a significant political force in the region and is not willing to cede its influence to the newly formed PAA.
The contention arises from the broader context of coalition politics in Kenya, where parties form alliances to strengthen their chances in elections. The Azimio la Umoja coalition, led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, is a significant political alliance that includes ODM, Jubilee, and other parties. Governor Kingi's PAA joined this coalition through the more established Jubilee Party, which Mr. Mwambie pointed out, diminishes PAA's authority in candidate selection processes.
Mr. Mwambie further challenged Governor Kingi, suggesting that if he is dissatisfied with ODM's strategy, he is free to support any presidential candidate or even consider running for the presidency himself. He stated, “If Governor Amason Jeffah Kingi isn’t comfortable with such an arrangement, he is free to support any of the presidential candidates, or he can as well offer himself for that post.”
In his signed press statement, Mr. Mwambie reiterated that no single political party should claim exclusive rights to candidate nominations within the coalition. He urged Governor Kingi and other leaders to adhere to the Azimio la Umoja Coalition guidelines and to avoid misleading the public on nomination matters. “As ODM, we welcome all political party players in the Azimio la Umoja Coalition Party but not with unrealistic demands such as Governor Kingi is putting,” he asserted.
The unfolding political dynamics in Kilifi County underscore the competitive nature of Kenyan politics, particularly in regions considered electoral battlegrounds. As the election season approaches, the interactions between coalition partners will likely shape the political landscape in significant ways.
