One person has died while two others are receiving treatment after they were trapped inside a quarry while extracting building stones in Kajimbo area of Oboch Location, Nyakach Sub-County.

The three victims, including a woman, were reportedly working at the quarry when they became trapped, triggering an alarm that attracted nearby villagers to the scene.

Residents responded to the distress call and rushed to rescue the victims, managing to pull all three out of the quarry before taking them to St Joseph Nyabondo Mission Hospital for medical attention.

However, one of the victims, identified as Kevin Ogembo, died on arrival at the hospital, while the other two remain admitted and are undergoing treatment.

Upper Nyakach Assistant County Commissioner Dawin Orina confirmed the incident, noting that the two survivors were still receiving medical care at the facility.

The cause of the incident had not been established by the time of publication. It was also not immediately clear how long the three remained trapped before villagers managed to rescue them.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of people involved in quarrying and stone extraction, activities that expose workers to potential dangers, including falling rocks and collapsing sections of excavation sites.

Quarry workers are often required to handle heavy building materials while working in areas where unstable ground can pose a serious threat to their safety.

The latest tragedy has left one person dead and two others nursing injuries, with the survivors continuing to receive treatment at St Joseph Nyabondo Mission Hospital.

Further details about the circumstances leading to the incident, including whether any safety measures were in place at the quarry, were not immediately available.

The identities of the two survivors and the extent of their injuries had also not been disclosed as they continued receiving treatment.

Residents are likely to await further information on the circumstances surrounding the incident as the affected families deal with the aftermath of the tragedy.
