One person has died and three others injured following a road accident along the Kakamega-Kisumu highway at Ehendwe in Vihiga County, prompting residents to renew calls for urgent repairs and safety improvements on the road.
The accident occurred on Sunday evening when a motorcycle reportedly lost control and rammed into a lorry that had broken down along the road.
Witnesses said the motorcycle was travelling at high speed from Majengo towards Mbale when the rider lost control and collided with the stationary lorry. The impact left one person dead at the scene, while three others sustained injuries.
The injured victims were rushed for medical attention, although details about their condition were not immediately available.
The latest incident has heightened concerns among residents and other road users, who say the Kakamega-Kisumu road, particularly the stretch around Ehendwe, has witnessed repeated accidents.
Residents have called on the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to urgently intervene by repairing sections of the road they consider dangerous and introducing measures to reduce speeding.
They are also demanding the expansion of the road and the installation of speed bumps at strategic points to help control motorists and prevent further accidents.
Road users say the recurring incidents have raised fears over the safety of pedestrians, motorcyclists and motorists using the busy highway, particularly in areas where vehicles frequently break down or traffic movements are heavy.
They argue that improving the road's condition and introducing appropriate traffic-calming measures could help reduce the risk of collisions and protect lives.
The residents want KeNHA and other relevant agencies to assess the accident-prone sections and implement measures to address the persistent safety concerns.
The latest fatal crash adds to concerns over road safety along the Kakamega-Kisumu highway, with residents urging authorities to act before more lives are lost.
Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, including reports that the motorcycle was travelling at high speed before the collision.
