The Odinga family and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) are marking a bittersweet day as party leader Oburu Oginga turns 83, exactly a year after the death of his younger brother and the party’s founding leader, Raila Amolo Odinga.
In a message shared on Thursday 15th October, ODM paid tribute to Raila, remembering him as a champion of democracy and a key figure in the country’s devolution journey, while celebrating Oburu’s birthday.
The party described October 15, 2025, as a painful day for its members following Raila’s death, adding that his memory would remain with them.
The anniversary comes a year after Raila died on October 15, 2025, marking a significant moment for his family, political allies and supporters across the country.
Oburu, who was born on October 15, 1943, marks his 83rd birthday on the same date. The coincidence brings together the party’s remembrance of its founding leader and its celebration of the man now leading the organisation.
Raila was a central figure in Kenyan politics for decades. His political career was closely associated with the struggle for multiparty democracy, constitutional reforms and the establishment of devolved government under the 2010 Constitution.
His death marked a major moment for ODM, whose supporters continue to reflect on his political legacy and contribution to the country.
It marked a significant change in ODM and left many Kenyans heartbroken and in pain and agony due to the loss of such a prominent person. Many Kenyans turned up to view his body as a sign of paying their last respects to him.
Oburu, a veteran politician and senator, now leads the party at a time when it continues to navigate life without the leader who shaped its identity for years.
For the Odinga family and ODM supporters, October 15 carries both grief and celebration: an opportunity to remember Raila’s life and legacy while wishing Oburu well as he enters another year of life.
