The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has confirmed fatalities and several injuries following a road accident involving a public service vehicle (PSV) and a commercial vehicle at Kanga area, near Mtito Andei, along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
In a statement issued on Sunday, October 25, 2026, NTSA said the crash occurred earlier in the day, with preliminary reports indicating that the two vehicles collided head-on.
The Authority said improper overtaking may have contributed to the accident, although investigations are still underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the collision.
“The NTSA crash investigation team is collaborating with the police to establish the full circumstances that led to the crash,” the authority said.
The number of people confirmed dead and the total number of passengers injured had not been specified in the statement.
NTSA expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the crash and wished those injured a speedy recovery as they receive medical treatment.
The incident adds to road safety concerns along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, one of Kenya's major transport corridors, which serves thousands of motorists, passengers and commercial vehicles travelling between the capital and the Coast.
The highway carries a high volume of long-distance passenger buses, matatus, private vehicles and heavy commercial trucks transporting goods to and from the Port of Mombasa. The mix of fast-moving traffic and heavy vehicles makes safe overtaking and adherence to traffic regulations particularly important.
Head-on collisions can have severe consequences, especially when they involve passenger vehicles and heavy commercial trucks. Improper overtaking, speeding, driver fatigue and misjudging the distance of oncoming vehicles are among the risks associated with such crashes, although investigators are yet to establish the specific factors that led to Sunday's incident.
The investigation is expected to establish how the collision occurred and whether any traffic violations or other contributing factors were involved.
NTSA works with the National Police Service to enforce road safety regulations and investigate crashes as part of efforts to reduce road deaths and injuries.
The authority has repeatedly urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic rules and avoid dangerous manoeuvres, particularly on busy highways where vehicles travel at high speeds.
Motorists using the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway have been urged to remain vigilant, maintain safe following distances and only overtake when the road ahead is clear and the manoeuvre can be completed safely.
Further details on the casualties and the outcome of the investigations are expected as authorities continue to establish the full extent of the crash.
