Murder suspect Nelson Ambia left the family of Feruz Hussein puzzled after he was spotted making signs and uttering inaudible words towards them while appearing in court.

The incident unfolded as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was ordered to conclude investigations into Feruz’s murder within 14 days, with her boyfriend, Ambia, remaining in custody over the killing.

Nairobi Magistrate Joan Mati issued the directive after detectives sought additional time to investigate the circumstances surrounding Feruz’s death, including a video allegedly recorded by Ambia and shared with the deceased’s mother and sister.

Ambia, who appeared in court wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words “Bad Boy,” is being investigated over the alleged murder, as well as the recording and circulation of the video.

DCI officer Amos Menza, attached to Kasarani, told the court that the footage had circulated widely online and required forensic examination to establish its source.

Menza further told the court that Ambia allegedly fled to Naivasha following the incident and was arrested after a 21-day manhunt.

Detectives opposed his release on bond, arguing that he had no fixed residence in Nairobi, which they said could complicate efforts to trace him if released before the investigations were completed.

The DCI asked the court for more time to finalise the probe and forward the investigation file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and a decision on whether Ambia should be charged.

In his response, Ambia asked the court to limit his detention to 15 days to allow detectives to complete their work. He also urged the magistrate to direct investigators to look into three separate incidents in which he claimed a group of men attacked him and inflicted serious injuries.

In her ruling, Magistrate Mati ordered detectives to complete their investigations within 14 days.

However, the magistrate cautioned against treating Ambia’s residence in a rented apartment as sufficient grounds to conclude that he was a flight risk.

She noted that his alleged flight to Naivasha after the incident raised concerns about whether he would be available to attend court if released on bond.

The case will be mentioned on November 5, 2026, when the court is expected to receive an update on the progress of the investigations.
