A 23-year-old man accused of killing an 18-year-old high school student in Molo has been ordered to remain in police custody for 21 days as investigations into the case continue.

Walter Kipkoech appeared before Molo Resident Magistrate Christine Mugo on Tuesday over the death of Joy Wangui, who was allegedly killed at her parents’ home in Moto village, Molo, on Sunday afternoon.

Police asked the court for more time to complete investigations, including DNA analysis of evidence recovered from the scene, a postmortem examination and a mental assessment of the suspect.

Investigators also told the court that releasing Kipkoech could put his safety at risk due to anger among members of the public following the killing.

Kipkoech did not oppose the application. Magistrate Mugo subsequently allowed the police to detain him for 21 days.

He is expected to return to court on October 27, 2026, when police will provide an update on the investigations and indicate the next step in the case.

The suspect was arrested on Monday evening at a hideout in Lagwenda village, Kuresoi North, where police said he had fled after the incident.

At the time of his arrest, Kipkoech was allegedly wearing a school T-shirt belonging to Wangui, with her name clearly marked on it.

Police said the suspect was known to the victim’s family and was allegedly in a romantic relationship with Wangui.

Investigators further allege that after the killing, the suspect used the victim’s blood to write messages on the walls of the house. Police believe the messages could provide clues about the circumstances surrounding the killing and the nature of the relationship between the two.

The investigations are ongoing, and Kipkoech remains in police custody as detectives work to establish what led to the teenager’s death.
