Manchester United have fined Lisandro Martínez following his criticism of the club’s leadership, but the matter has now been closed after the defender met with head coach Michael Carrick and senior club officials.

Martínez reportedly met the club’s management to explain his comments and apologise. Following the discussions, both sides are understood to have put the issue behind them.

The Argentine defender had expressed frustration after United’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid on Tuesday, October 13.

His comments raised concerns about the club’s recruitment and squad investment, with director of football Jason Wilcox among those he criticised.

The remarks caused tension at the club, prompting talks between Martínez and the leadership.

Martínez later apologised in a social media post, admitting that his frustration had led him to speak at the wrong time and in the wrong place. He also acknowledged that his comments had not helped the team’s unity.

The club has not disclosed the amount of the fine. However, the issue is now considered settled, with no further disciplinary action reported.

The development comes after United dropped points in their Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday, October 10.

United looked set to claim all three points after Bryan Mbeumo scored in the 73rd minute. However, Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke equalised in stoppage time to earn his side a 1-1 draw.

Tottenham had been reduced to 10 men following Rodrigo Bentancur’s dismissal in the 78th minute, but United were unable to make their numerical advantage count.

The result added to the pressure on the team as it seeks greater consistency in its performances.

With the Martínez matter now closed, United will be looking to shift their focus back to football ahead of their next Premier League fixture against Leeds United on Sunday, October 18.

Martínez is expected to move on from the incident and continue contributing to the team as the club works to put the recent tension behind it.
