Two suspects have been arrested in Kibwezi, Makueni County, following a police operation that led to the recovery of a consignment of cannabis and equipment believed to have been used in handling and packaging narcotic drugs.
The suspects, identified as Abdulatif Mohamed and Oscar Muema Nduku, were apprehended by detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) after officers acted on a tip-off about suspected drug trafficking activities in the area.
According to the police, the detectives raided a residential house believed to have been used as a storage and distribution centre for narcotics.
A search of the premises led to the recovery of 493 rolls of bhang, alongside two brown envelopes and a carrier bag containing cannabis.
The officers also seized two weighing scales, Rizla papers and other items suspected to have been used to weigh, handle and package the drugs for distribution.
Cash believed to be proceeds of crime was recovered during the operation.
The two suspects remain in police custody as detectives complete the necessary procedures ahead of their arraignment in court.
The recovered drugs, cash and other items have been secured as exhibits to support investigations and possible prosecution.
The arrests come amid the government's renewed efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse, with law enforcement agencies intensifying operations targeting individuals and networks suspected of supplying illegal drugs across the country.
The government has identified the fight against narcotics and illicit substances as a key security and public health priority, given the impact of drug abuse on young people, families and communities.
Anti-narcotics operations are intended to disrupt the supply chains through which drugs reach consumers, while investigations seek to establish the extent of suspected trafficking activities and identify other individuals who may be involved.
Residential properties suspected of serving as drug storage facilities and distribution points have also come under scrutiny as authorities pursue leads on the movement and sale of narcotics.
The Kibwezi operation highlights the role of public information in supporting law enforcement efforts, with the latest arrests following a tip-off that enabled detectives to identify and raid the suspected premises.
Authorities have continued to urge members of the public to share credible information about suspected drug trafficking with the relevant security agencies as the government steps up its campaign against narcotics and illicit substances.
The two suspects will have an opportunity to answer the allegations against them in court.
