Lamu residents protest alleged exclusion from Sh2.2 trillion oil refinery project
Police in Lamu have fired teargas to disperse hundreds of residents who turned up at Mkunguni Gardens on Lamu Island for a planned protest.
The residents were demonstrating against what they described as their exclusion from the proposed Sh2.2 trillion oil refinery project.
They are calling on the government to involve the local community before the planned groundbreaking ceremony, saying they have not been consulted or provided with sufficient information about the project.
The protesters said they want the government to explain the project and clarify how local residents will be involved before construction begins.
