The County Government of Lamu, in collaboration with the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), has taken a significant step towards enhancing drought preparedness by validating the Lamu County Drought Contingency Plan 2026. This milestone was achieved during a County Steering Group (CSG) meeting held today, which saw the convergence of various stakeholders, including government departments, development partners, humanitarian organizations, and other key players in the region. The meeting was officiated by Deputy Governor Dr. Mbarak Bahjaj, who emphasized the crucial role of early preparedness, coordinated action, and strong partnerships in mitigating the adverse impacts of drought.

The contingency plan, which aims to provide a robust framework for drought response, was presented by Ms. Gertrude from NDMA. She meticulously guided the participants through the document, allowing them to review and validate its contents. Ms. Gertrude described the plan as a comprehensive multi-sectoral framework that integrates interventions across several critical sectors, including water, health and nutrition, education, agriculture, livestock, peace and security, social protection, and coordination. This approach is designed to ensure a unified and effective drought preparedness and response mechanism, which is vital for a region like Lamu, frequently affected by droughts.

During the meeting, Charles Muthoka, representing World Vision Kenya, reiterated the organization's steadfast commitment to supporting the implementation of the plan. He stated, "World Vision has been, and will continue to be, at the forefront of supporting drought resilience and humanitarian interventions in Lamu. We remain committed to working with the County Government and all partners to ensure the successful implementation of this Contingency Plan." His remarks underscore the importance of collaboration between governmental and non-governmental entities in addressing the challenges posed by drought.

Deputy Governor Bahjaj called upon all County departments and development partners to align their programs with the validated plan. He stressed that effective implementation would require sustained collaboration, adequate resource mobilization, and timely action. The involvement of all stakeholders is crucial to ensure that the plan's objectives are met and that the community is better prepared for future droughts.

Additionally, Shee Kupi Shee, the Director of Disaster Risk Management and Peace Building, highlighted that the validated plan positions Lamu to act proactively. By strengthening resilience and reducing the humanitarian and socio-economic impacts of drought through coordinated, evidence-based interventions, the county aims to safeguard its population and resources against the severe consequences of prolonged dry spells.

The validation of the Lamu County Drought Contingency Plan 2026 marks a pivotal moment in the county's efforts to enhance its drought preparedness and response capabilities. With the commitment of all stakeholders, Lamu is poised to tackle the challenges of drought more effectively, ensuring the well-being of its residents and the sustainability of its natural resources.
