The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has officially handed over a state-of-the-art fish cold-storage facility and an ice-making plant to the Msambweni community in Kwale County. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to bolster the region’s blue economy, which is vital for the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems.
The commissioning ceremony took place in Kinondo, where KPA Managing Director Captain William Ruto emphasized the government's dedication to ensuring that development projects have a tangible impact on local communities. "Our objective is to ensure that projects such as this fish cold-storage facility, the ice-making plant, and the Port of Shimoni directly improve the lives of the surrounding communities," he stated. Captain Ruto highlighted that the facility would significantly aid local fishermen by enhancing fish preservation, reducing post-harvest losses, and increasing both the quality and market value of their catch. This, in turn, is expected to boost the income levels of the fishermen and contribute to the overall economic development of the region.
The project, valued at Ksh126.9 million, is not only a significant investment in the local fisheries sector but also a catalyst for job creation, particularly for the youth. It is anticipated to stimulate growth in both the fisheries and the broader maritime sectors, offering new economic opportunities and fostering sustainable development in the coastal community.
Msambweni MP Feisal Bader, who was also present at the event, reiterated the government's commitment to empowering young people through such development projects. "This project will benefit members of the Beach Management Units by improving fish storage, increasing fishermen’s incomes, and creating more economic opportunities for young people in Msambweni," he said. The MP underscored the importance of investing in fisheries infrastructure, noting that such investments would enable residents to derive greater value from the region’s abundant marine resources.
The establishment of the fish cold-storage facility and ice-making plant is seen as a crucial step in enhancing the efficiency and productivity of the local fishing industry. By providing essential infrastructure, the government and KPA aim to ensure that the community can fully exploit the potential of the blue economy, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the region.
