Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) women’s basketball head coach Samuel Ocholla has expressed frustration following the last-minute postponement of the National Women’s Basketball Premier League final playoffs, saying the decision disrupted his team’s plans.
The best-of-five final series between defending champions KPA and Equity Hawks was scheduled to begin last Saturday, with Game One, followed by Game Two on Sunday. However, both matches were postponed until further notice, leaving the teams waiting for a new schedule.
Ocholla said the postponement affected his side, which had prepared for the finals and was eager to take to the court after a demanding semifinal campaign.
“The ladies were ready to play. We wanted to finish the league and then prepare for Zone Five, but not everything goes as planned,” Ocholla said.
The KPA coach expressed disappointment at the timing of the decision, noting that the team had been preparing to compete for the league title before turning its attention to the next assignment.
KPA had secured their place in the final after a dominant performance against TH3 Swish, sweeping the semifinal series 3-0 to maintain their bid for another league crown.
Equity Hawks, meanwhile, had a tougher route to the final, overcoming Stanbic Aces 3-2 in their semifinal series to set up a contest against the Dockers.
The postponement has delayed the much-anticipated meeting between the two sides, with KPA seeking to defend their title against an Equity Hawks team that battled through a five-game semifinal series to reach the final.
For KPA, the immediate priority had been to complete the domestic campaign before shifting focus to the Zone Five competition. The change in schedule has left the team having to wait before it can conclude the league season and proceed with its preparations for the regional assignment.
Despite the setback, Ocholla acknowledged that plans do not always unfold as expected. The team will now have to adjust to the postponement as it awaits communication on when the final series will resume.
KPA and Equity Hawks are expected to renew their rivalry when the finals eventually get underway, with the Dockers aiming to retain their championship crown.
