Police in Kiambu are investigating the overnight demolition of a 45-metre section of a perimeter wall under construction at Kiambu High School, raising concerns over the safety of 1,650 students, including candidates sitting their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

The destruction has left part of the school compound exposed, prompting calls for urgent security measures to prevent unauthorised access and safeguard learners during the national examinations.

School principal Joshua Nderitu reported the incident to police, who arrived at approximately 4:35 a.m. to document the damage and secure the scene.

School Board Chairman James Kuria Mutura said the wall was being constructed to strengthen security and prevent unauthorised entry into the institution, following reports of theft involving intruders who allegedly accessed the school through the surrounding bush.

With candidates currently sitting their KCSE examinations, Mutura warned that the damaged perimeter could expose learners to security breaches and disrupt the calm environment needed for them to concentrate on their examinations.

Parent-Teachers Association Chairman Laban Ogusi has appealed to the Kiambu County Commissioner to intervene urgently and provide additional security to protect students and school property.

Ogusi said the demolition had also disrupted construction works, which are being funded through parents' contributions.

More than 70 skilled and unskilled workers have reportedly been sent home following the destruction.

Kiambu Sub-County Police Commander Elema Hassan Sore confirmed the incident, linking it to a longstanding boundary dispute involving the school and neighbouring properties.

Sore said police were investigating whether the dispute could have contributed to the demolition as officers worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.

He assured the school community that the National Police Service would prioritise the safety of students as candidates continue with their examinations.

Investigations are ongoing, with police pursuing those responsible for the destruction.

The authorities added that those responsible will face the law.
