More than 5,000 residents of Kavunyalalo village in Malindi Subcounty of Kilifi County are celebrating the completion of a transformative solar-powered water project that promises to significantly enhance their quality of life. This initiative, spearheaded by local leader Mwarandu Kombe, aims to address the long-standing water scarcity issues that have plagued the community, thereby improving both domestic living conditions and agricultural productivity.
The project involves the installation of water pipes and fittings, which will connect water from a newly completed borehole directly to the homes and farms of the villagers. This development is particularly significant for the residents, who have long struggled with the high costs and logistical challenges of accessing water. Previously, many villagers relied on fuel-powered generators to pump water, a method that proved to be both costly and unsustainable. "I used to spend a lot of money to purchase fuel for running the generator to pump water for irrigation and I turned to gas but still it was expensive," said Kombe, reflecting on the difficulties faced before the project's implementation. "We thank these organizations for giving us the solar-powered water borehole."
The project is funded by DANCO in partnership with AMREF, two organizations committed to improving water access and sanitation in underserved communities. By harnessing solar energy, the initiative not only provides a reliable and cost-effective water supply but also aligns with sustainable environmental practices. The solar-powered system ensures that water is available for domestic use, farming, and food production, thereby supporting the community's economic activities and enhancing food security.
Residents have expressed immense gratitude for the project, highlighting the significant impact it will have on their daily lives. Many have noted that the time and resources previously spent on fetching water can now be redirected towards more productive activities, such as farming and other income-generating ventures. The availability of a consistent water supply is expected to boost agricultural yields, enabling farmers to cultivate their land more efficiently and increase their output.
This development marks a new chapter for Kavunyalalo village, as the community looks forward to reaping the benefits of improved water access. The solar-powered water project not only alleviates the burden of water scarcity but also empowers residents to pursue a more prosperous and sustainable future.
