The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into allegations of defilement involving a police officer attached to Lumakanda Police Station in Lugari Sub-County, Kakamega County.
According to IPOA, the matter was reported at Lumakanda Police Station on September 27, 2026, before being brought to the attention of the oversight authority.
IPOA said it has since deployed a team to investigate the allegations and has made significant progress, including recording statements from relevant persons, processing and documenting the scene and obtaining medical records.
The investigation team is undertaking further inquiries, including recording additional statements, extracting and analysing available CCTV footage and conducting an identification parade where necessary.
The police officer identified in connection with the allegations has since been arrested and presented before court as investigations continue.
IPOA said it is treating the matter with seriousness given the vulnerability of the alleged victim and the nature of the allegations.
The authority said it will conduct a thorough, impartial and evidence-based investigation and take appropriate action within its statutory mandate based on its findings.
IPOA also reiterated that it prioritises allegations of abuse of office, sexual exploitation and defilement committed by police officers as part of its mandate to promote accountability, professionalism and respect for human rights in policing.
