The Kenyan government has released Ksh2.426 billion to facilitate payments for the June 2026 cycle of the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Programme. This initiative, managed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, aims to provide financial assistance to 1,213,156 beneficiaries, comprising older persons and individuals living with severe disabilities who are enrolled in the programme. The Ministry confirmed that the disbursement process began on August 3, 2026, with each beneficiary receiving Sh2,000 for the June payment cycle.
The Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Programme is implemented through the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs. It forms a crucial component of the government's broader social protection strategy, which seeks to alleviate poverty and enhance the welfare of vulnerable groups. Principal Secretary Joseph Motari emphasized that the Inua Jamii initiative is a key pillar in the government's efforts to cushion vulnerable households from economic hardships and improve their overall quality of life.
The programme specifically targets older persons aged 70 years and above, as well as individuals living with severe disabilities who require ongoing social and financial support. The latest disbursement is anticipated to assist beneficiaries in meeting essential needs such as food, healthcare, and other household expenses. This financial aid is particularly significant in a country where many elderly citizens and people with disabilities face economic challenges due to limited income opportunities and high living costs.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has reiterated the importance of the Inua Jamii programme in safeguarding the dignity, social inclusion, and well-being of vulnerable citizens. By providing regular cash transfers, the government aims to reduce the financial burden on elderly citizens and households caring for people with severe disabilities, thereby promoting a more equitable society.
The announcement of the disbursement was made through a statement issued on August 4, 2026, by the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs. The government remains committed to ensuring that the funds reach the intended beneficiaries promptly and efficiently, reinforcing its dedication to social welfare and protection.
As the programme continues to evolve, it underscores the government's recognition of the critical role social protection plays in fostering a just and inclusive society. By addressing the needs of its most vulnerable citizens, the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Programme contributes to the broader national agenda of poverty reduction and social equity.
