The Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), Douglas Kanja, has approved the promotion of 1,948 police officers whose advancement to various ranks had been pending, following a ruling by the Court of Appeal of Kenya.
In a statement, the National Police Service said the promotions were approved in line with the court’s decision in Civil Appeal Nos. E971 and E957 of 2025, paving the way for the affected officers to advance to their respective ranks.
According to the NPS, the officers had successfully completed the required promotional courses and fulfilled all the prescribed conditions for advancement. Their promotions will take effect accordingly.
The development marks a significant step for the affected officers, whose promotions had remained pending before the latest decision.
On behalf of the National Police Service, Inspector General Kanja congratulated all the promoted officers and wished them success as they assume their new ranks and responsibilities.
Kanja also urged the officers to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and diligence as they carry out their duties.
He emphasised that promotion comes with increased responsibility, calling on the officers to serve the public with fairness, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
The Inspector General further underscored the importance of ensuring that the officers’ advancement translates into improved service delivery and more effective policing across the country.
The National Police Service said the promotions are expected to strengthen operational efficiency and enhance service delivery to the public, in line with its ongoing reforms and strategic objectives.
The move comes as the service continues to pursue its commitment to building a professional, efficient and responsive police force capable of addressing the security needs of the public.
The NPS reiterated its commitment to protecting and serving the public while promoting people-centred and accountable policing.
It said its broader goal remains to provide effective security services that uphold the rule of law and contribute to a safe and prosperous society.
