Gor Mahia Football Club has appointed Eliud Owalo, the head of the Government Efficiency Office, as its acting patron. This decision follows the untimely death of the club's long-serving patron, former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. The announcement was made on Thursday, October 16, 2025, by the club chairman, Ambrose Rachier. Owalo is set to assume the role immediately, stepping in to fill the void left by Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday in India, where he was undergoing medical treatment.

Raila Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics and a beloved leader, was not only a political icon but also a fervent supporter of Gor Mahia. His tenure as the club's patron was marked by active involvement and unwavering support. Odinga's passion for the club was evident as he frequently attended matches and was instrumental in various club initiatives. His financial contributions were significant, with his latest donation of Sh10 million earlier this year aimed at supporting the team's operations for the 2025-26 season.

The loss of Odinga is deeply felt within the Gor Mahia community and the wider football fraternity in Kenya. His commitment to the club transcended mere ceremonial duties, as he was a key figure in fostering the club's growth and success. The announcement of Eliud Owalo as acting patron is seen as a strategic move to ensure continuity and stability within the club during this period of mourning and transition.

Ambrose Rachier, while making the announcement, emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum that Odinga had helped build. "Following the sad demise of our long-serving patron, the Right Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga, and in order to avoid the vacuum created thereby, the Gor Mahia Executive Committee wishes to notify the public and members," he stated. The deputy patron echoed these sentiments, underscoring the need for a seamless transition to uphold the club's legacy and ongoing projects.

Eliud Owalo, known for his efficiency and leadership in government, is expected to bring his expertise to the club, ensuring that Gor Mahia continues to thrive both on and off the pitch. As the club navigates this challenging time, the appointment of Owalo is a testament to Gor Mahia's resilience and commitment to honoring Raila Odinga's legacy.
