Detectives from Gigiri have arrested a suspect allegedly involved in a violent robbery in Parklands, Nairobi, after footage of the incident circulated widely on social media.
The video reportedly shows the suspect and his accomplices attacking a member of the public before stealing valuables and fleeing the scene.
According to the police, the arrest followed investigations into the incident, with detectives working to identify and track down those captured in the footage.
The remaining suspects are still being pursued as investigators seek to establish the full circumstances of the robbery and determine the role played by each individual involved.
The incident has renewed concerns over street robberies in Nairobi, particularly attacks in which victims are confronted by groups of assailants and robbed of their belongings.
Police have urged members of the public to remain alert when walking through residential areas, business districts and less populated streets, especially during early morning and late evening hours.
Residents have also been advised to avoid displaying expensive phones, jewellery, cash and other valuables unnecessarily while moving around the city.
Where possible, members of the public are encouraged to use well-lit and busy routes and exercise caution when walking alone in unfamiliar or secluded areas.
Police further advise anyone confronted by violent robbers to prioritise personal safety rather than risk escalating the situation through physical resistance. Victims should report incidents once they are safe and provide investigators with any information that could help identify those responsible.
Business owners, residents and property managers have also been encouraged to review their security arrangements, including CCTV coverage, lighting and access controls, to help deter criminal activity and support investigations when incidents occur.
Anyone with information that could assist detectives in tracing the remaining suspects has been urged to report it to the authorities.
Police have cautioned the public against confronting suspected criminals or sharing unverified identities online, saying information should be handled through the appropriate channels.
