Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hosted Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other opposition figures at his Wamunyoro residence, signalling continued engagement between his political camp and leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a post on X on Tuesday, October 20, Gachagua welcomed the delegation, referring to the visitors as his “cousins from Linda Mwananchi” and expressing optimism about their gathering.

“Welcome to Wamunyoro residence my cousins from Linda Mwananchi. When we come together great things Must happen,” he wrote.

Among those pictured with Gachagua were Sifuna, Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni, among others.

The gathering comes as opposition leaders continue consultations and political mobilisation ahead of the next general election, with questions over potential alliances and the selection of a joint presidential candidate remaining central to the opposition's political strategy.

Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has previously expressed support for Linda Mwananchi's mobilisation efforts and called for unity among its leaders.

In September, Gachagua publicly urged Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino to contain disagreements between their supporters, warning that internal divisions could weaken the movement ahead of the 2027 elections.

Gachagua said he had spoken separately to the two leaders and urged them to address tensions playing out among their supporters. He also said he had asked Nyandarua Senator John Methu to help bring them together.

The intervention came amid disagreements over the movement's leadership and the political vehicle it would use in the next election.

Linda Mwananchi subsequently settled on Sifuna as its leader and presidential candidate following a leadership retreat in September. The movement also announced plans to build a coalition with like-minded political parties.

Its political organisation has continued to develop. On October 2, the Registrar of Political Parties had approved the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi Movement name, allowing the group to pursue the next steps towards formalising its political vehicle. The approval was a name reservation and did not amount to full registration of a new political party.

Gachagua's latest meeting with Sifuna and the other leaders provides a further indication of contact between the former Deputy President and figures associated with the movement.

However, the former Deputy President did not disclose the purpose of Tuesday's gathering, the issues discussed or whether the leaders reached any resolutions.

The meeting therefore does not, on its own, establish a formal coalition agreement between DCP and Linda Mwananchi. Any further political arrangement would require confirmation from the leaders involved.

With the 2027 General Election approaching, engagements between opposition figures are likely to remain an important part of efforts to build political alliances and negotiate their respective roles in the contest.
