The family and friends of 23-year-old Latifa Akumu are demanding justice following the discovery of her body in River Nithi, Tharaka-Nithi County, in circumstances that have raised questions about the events leading to her death.
Latifa’s body was recovered from the river on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, after it was found in the water near Nithi Bridge. She was dressed in black, and three bags were reportedly found around her body.
Police retrieved the remains and transferred them to Chuka Mortuary as efforts to establish her identity got underway. At the time, the woman had not been identified, prompting appeals for information that could help trace her relatives.
A separate account shared by Jaber Nyoremo has raised disturbing allegations about what may have happened before Latifa’s body was found.
According to the post, Latifa was allegedly killed inside a house on the day she disappeared and claimed that the person responsible contacted accomplices who helped tie her body with a rope before placing it inside three bags.
The account also alleged that the individuals later drove to Nithi Bridge, where they threw her body into the river before leaving the scene.
The post suggested that the alleged killing may have been connected to a relationship dispute, claiming that Latifa had rejected the man accused of killing her. However, the allegations have not been independently verified, and police have not publicly confirmed the account or established a motive.
The claims have intensified calls from family members and friends for a thorough investigation into the young woman's death.
With Latifa now identified, attention has shifted to establishing the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death.
Police had not, in the information available, announced any arrests or issued an official account confirming the claims circulating on social media.
As her family and friends seek justice, the case has left them demanding answers about what happened to the 23-year-old and calling for those responsible for her death to face the law.
The investigation is expected to establish the facts surrounding the incident, including whether the allegations about the alleged killing and disposal of her body are supported by evidence.
