Some Ethiopian citizens have crossed into Kenya in search of safety as clashes in the neighbouring country enter their third day, prompting heightened security along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.

The civilians have sought refuge in Moyale, Marsabit County, amid continued fighting in Ethiopia, raising concerns over the security situation in the border region.

Marsabit County Commissioner Stanley Kamande said security agencies had intensified surveillance and strengthened security measures along the border to contain any threats arising from the unrest.

Speaking to journalists, Kamande urged residents of Moyale to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the relevant security agencies as authorities continue monitoring developments.

He emphasised the importance of cooperation between local communities and security officers in maintaining peace and preventing insecurity from spilling over into Kenyan territory.

The commissioner did not disclose the number of Ethiopian citizens who had crossed into Kenya or provide details about the areas affected by the fighting.

He also called on peace organisations and other stakeholders to develop alternative approaches to resolving the tensions and restoring stability along the border.

Kamande said concerted efforts were needed to address the situation and promote peaceful coexistence among communities living on both sides of the border.

Moyale is a key border town connecting Kenya and Ethiopia, with residents on both sides maintaining social and economic ties. Any prolonged instability in the neighbouring country could therefore affect border communities and disrupt their daily activities.

The arrival of people seeking refuge also highlights the potential humanitarian impact of the clashes, particularly on families forced to leave their homes in search of safety.

Meanwhile, Kenyan security agencies are continuing to monitor the border as the fighting enters another day.

Residents have been encouraged to remain alert and share credible information that could help security teams respond to emerging threats.

Authorities are expected to continue assessing the situation as efforts to restore calm along the border are pursued.
