Equity Group has received the Regional Leadership in Scaling Water and Sanitation Finance Award from Water.org in recognition of its efforts to expand access to affordable financing for water and sanitation services. The award was presented to Julius Kamau, Equity Group’s Associate Director for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, by Water.org President and Chief Operating Officer Vedika Bhandarkar during the Water Credit Forum in Nairobi on October 16, 2026.

The recognition highlights a partnership spanning more than 15 years across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through the collaboration, households have been supported in accessing financing for water connections and sanitation facilities, helping address the cost barriers that can prevent families from investing in essential services.

Access to clean water and adequate sanitation remains a major household and development concern across many African communities. Connecting homes to reliable water supplies, improving sanitation facilities and upgrading household infrastructure often require upfront spending that can be difficult for lower-income families to meet from savings alone.

Water and sanitation financing offers households a way to spread these costs through structured loans rather than relying entirely on immediate cash payments. Such financing can help families invest in practical improvements, although affordability and repayment terms remain important considerations for borrowers.

Equity Group’s recognition reflects the role financial institutions can play in connecting development needs with financial products. By extending credit for household water and sanitation improvements, lenders can help customers finance essential infrastructure while supporting broader efforts to improve living conditions.

The award also underscores the importance of partnerships between financial institutions and organisations focused on water access. Such collaborations can combine lending networks with specialised knowledge of water and sanitation needs, helping financing reach households that may otherwise struggle to fund improvements.

For Equity Group, the recognition adds to its wider focus on environmental and social impact alongside its core banking activities. Its work in the sector illustrates how financial services can be applied to needs beyond conventional business investment, including household infrastructure and community wellbeing.

The long-term impact of these initiatives will depend on continued access to suitable financing, the affordability of repayment and the availability of reliable water and sanitation infrastructure. As demand for essential services grows, partnerships between banks and development organisations are likely to remain an important route for helping households fund improvements.
