Police in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County, are investigating after part of a human leg was found at a garage in Makindu town.
The remains were discovered by workers at the garage earlier today after they reportedly spotted a dog chewing on what appeared to be a piece of flesh. The workers took the item from the dog before realising it was part of a human body, prompting them to alert the police.
Officers who arrived at the scene collected the remains and took them to the mortuary at Makindu Level 4 Hospital. Police have since launched investigations to establish where the remains came from and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
How the discovery unfolded
According to the workers, nothing appeared unusual at first — it was only on closer inspection that the object the dog was carrying turned out to be human tissue. Their quick decision to secure the remains and call the authorities will likely prove important, as scenes involving partial remains are highly sensitive and easily contaminated.
Detectives are expected to treat the garage and its surroundings as a potential crime scene. Investigators will typically comb the area for additional remains or evidence and may extend the search to dumping sites, quarries and bushland around Makindu.
What investigators will focus on
Forensic examination at the mortuary will attempt to establish basic details about the deceased, including approximate age and how long the remains may have been outside a body. DNA sampling may be used if a match with a reported missing person is sought.
Police will also review missing-person reports filed in Makindu and neighbouring sub-counties, and may appeal to the public for information. Anyone with knowledge that could assist the investigation has been urged to contact the nearest police station or the DCI offices in Makueni County.
