The death toll from a head-on collision involving two public service vehicles (PSVs) along the Katito-Kendu Bay Road in Nyakweree has risen to four, following an accident that left 27 other passengers injured.

The accident occurred in the Maembe Mbili area, where the two matatus, travelling in opposite directions, collided while one was heading from Kisumu and the other from Migori.

Initial reports indicated that two people had died on the spot following the impact. The fatalities included the driver of one of the matatus and a female passenger.

However, the number of people confirmed dead has since risen to four, comprising three men and one woman.

A total of 21 injured passengers were rushed to St. Jane Nyadero Hospital for treatment, while six others were taken to Ayier Medical Clinic, where they were treated and discharged.

The circumstances leading to the head-on collision remain unclear, as further details about the accident were yet to be established.

The incident has renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly drivers of public service vehicles who carry large numbers of passengers daily.

Drivers have been urged to observe traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds, avoid dangerous overtaking and remain alert, especially when approaching busy sections of highways. Motorists have also been cautioned against reckless driving and other behaviours that could endanger passengers and other road users.

Passengers have similarly been encouraged to speak up when drivers engage in dangerous practices that put their lives at risk.

The crash adds to concerns over road safety, with head-on collisions often resulting in severe injuries and fatalities due to the force of impact.

Authorities are expected to establish the cause of the accident and determine the circumstances under which the two matatus collided.

The latest update brings the confirmed death toll to four, revising the earlier report that two people had died at the scene.
