Kenyan singer and songwriter Bien-Aimé Baraza, popularly known as Bien, has signed with American record label Quality Control Music in a move expected to expand his reach in international music markets.
The deal marks a significant milestone in the career of the award-winning musician, who spent nearly two decades building his reputation as one of East Africa’s leading musical talents as a founding member of Sauti Sol before embarking on a solo career.
Quality Control Music, popularly known as QC, is a major force in the American hip-hop industry, having helped shape the careers of several prominent artists.
Its partnership with Bien signals growing international interest in African music and the potential for established African performers to reach audiences beyond the continent.
Bien’s latest single, “I’ll Be Okay,” released through a joint venture between Quality Control Music and Courtesy Of, marks the first release under the new arrangement.
The song is also the first taste of his forthcoming album, Alusa Continua, which is expected to be released on November 20.
Quality Control Music Chief Operating Officer Kevin “Coach K” Lee praised Bien’s musical ability and stage presence, describing him as an artist capable of captivating audiences with minimal instrumentation.
“Bien is a star—seasoned, deeply talented and the kind of artist who can hold a stadium with just a guitar,” Lee said. “It’s so exciting to work with someone that special.”
QC Chief Executive Officer Pierre “P” Thomas also expressed confidence in the Kenyan singer’s potential, citing his songwriting, performance skills and established fan base.
He said the partnership would focus on expanding Bien’s global reach rather than building his career from scratch.
“Bien has it! He’s got the songs, is a great performer, has a strong fan base and has already done a lot on his own,” Thomas said.
Thomas also highlighted the possibility of working alongside Nigerian Afrobeats star Tekno to bring their musical visions to life, describing the opportunity as one of the exciting aspects of the partnership.
Bien’s journey to the international stage began with Sauti Sol, the Kenyan band he co-founded with Savara Mudigi, Polycarp Otieno and Willis Chimano.
Formed in the early 2000s, the group became one of Africa’s most recognisable contemporary bands through its blend of Afro-pop, soul, R&B and Kenyan musical influences.
Sauti Sol built a loyal following through hits such as “Sura Yako,” “Kuliko Jana,” “Melanin” and “Suzanna.”
Their music, characterised by rich vocal harmonies and polished live performances, helped establish the group as a leading ambassador for Kenyan music internationally.
The band also collaborated with Nigerian superstar Burna Boy on “Afrikan Star,” further strengthening its continental profile.
After years of performing together, Sauti Sol announced an indefinite hiatus from group activities in 2023, giving its members an opportunity to pursue individual projects.
Bien subsequently intensified his solo career, releasing his debut album, Alusa Why Are You Topless?, in 2023.
The project demonstrated his ability to stand independently as a singer and songwriter while exploring musical styles beyond the group’s established sound.
His solo career has since benefited from his existing fan base, collaborations and experience performing before audiences across Africa and beyond.
The forthcoming Alusa Continua is expected to build on that foundation, with “I’ll Be Okay” introducing the next phase of his musical journey.
Bien’s signing comes at a time when African music is attracting growing attention from international labels, promoters and audiences.
Nigerian Afrobeats has played a particularly significant role in this expansion, while other genres from across the continent have continued to gain visibility in global markets.
For Kenya’s music industry, the deal represents another opportunity to bring local talent to a wider international audience.
Bien enters the partnership with an established catalogue, years of industry experience and a strong following, giving Quality Control Music a foundation on which to build his international profile.
With “I’ll Be Okay” marking the beginning of the collaboration and Alusa Continua scheduled for release on November 20, the partnership could become an important chapter in Bien’s evolution from an East African music star into a more prominent global act.
