The African Union Commission has issued a clarification following concerns raised by Egypt over a statement it released on October 1, 2026, regarding rising regional tensions.

In the clarification, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of respect for the sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity of states, as well as non-interference in the internal affairs of member states.

The Commission said its position was guided by the need to prioritise political and diplomatic solutions over military action and stressed that its statements fall within its mandate to promote peace, security and stability across the continent.

It further clarified that its October 1 statement was not intended to attribute responsibility for ongoing events to any neighbouring country.

Instead, the Commission said, the statement was a call for de-escalation following diplomatic expulsions from three capitals, while urging the affected parties to exercise restraint and maintain open channels of communication.

The AU Commission said such calls are consistent with its institutional responsibilities under the African Union's Constitutive Act and relevant protocols, particularly in preventing misunderstandings, further escalation and the widening of tensions that could threaten regional stability.

The Commission also emphasised the importance it places on its relationship with Egypt, describing the country as a founding member of the African Union and a key partner in efforts to promote peace, security, continental integration and development.
