Artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced on Sunday, October 18, 2026, that it will allocate 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund aimed at supporting initiatives that address the social and economic impacts of AI. This commitment, which is subject to shareholder approval, could expand as the company’s valuation increases, thereby enhancing the fund's role in distributing the benefits of AI development.

The company, known for developing the Claude family of AI assistants, stated that the fund will be established as a wholly owned limited liability company. Under the proposed structure, the fund could receive an additional 2% of Anthropic’s shares at the board’s discretion for every 50% increase in the company’s value above a yet-to-be-disclosed baseline.

This initiative comes amid the rapid growth of generative AI, which raises critical questions about who benefits financially from the technology and how businesses should address its effects on employment and society. Anthropic has made AI safety and responsible development central to its corporate mission.

According to the company, the fund could finance donations to nonprofit organizations, provide direct distributions to specific populations, and support programs that address changes in the labor market. Anthropic emphasized that the fund’s equity will not be utilized for lobbying or political contributions in the United States or elsewhere.

The announcement builds on existing commitments from Anthropic’s founders and employees to direct part of their equity towards public-benefit purposes. The company revealed that its founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings when Anthropic was founded, and an employee equity donation-matching program has been in place since its inception.

With the new fund, approximately 20% of Anthropic’s shares will be dedicated to public-benefit purposes, excluding any additional allocations triggered by future valuation increases, according to the company.

Additionally, Anthropic has committed $200 million to study and address the effects of AI on workers. The company argues that while the technology could generate significant economic value, it may also cause disruptions as businesses automate tasks and reorganize operations.

The establishment of the fund coincides with Anthropic's preparations for a potential initial public offering, which could position it as one of the most closely watched companies in the AI sector. The proposed equity allocation introduces a mechanism for the fund’s resources to grow alongside the company’s commercial success.

However, the eventual impact of the fund will depend on its governance, the value of its shareholding, and the programs it chooses to support. Anthropic has indicated that it will provide further details on the fund’s structure, governance arrangements, and valuation thresholds in the coming months, along with a public-benefit report outlining progress towards its stated mission.
