Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS) personnel from Shimoni Station executed a successful rescue operation, saving 41 individuals after a passenger vessel capsized near Mpunguti ya Juu Island on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The vessel, MV Siri Ya Mafanikio, was en route from Shimoni to Pemba Island when it encountered adverse weather conditions approximately 1.5 nautical miles off the island. Onboard were 12 Kenyans and 29 Tanzanians, along with assorted cargo. The incident occurred when the vessel was caught in strong winds and rough seas, leading to its capsizing.
The KCGS received a distress call at 9:04 a.m., prompting the swift deployment of the Special Boat Unit. Patrol Boat 322 was dispatched immediately, and a search-and-rescue operation was conducted with urgency. Thanks to the rapid response, all 41 people on board were safely rescued, and no casualties were reported. The vessel's wreckage was subsequently towed to the Shimoni Port Zone, where it awaits further investigation to determine the precise cause of the accident.
Capsizing incidents in the channel between the Kenyan coast and Pemba Island can quickly escalate into life-threatening situations, especially when passengers are not equipped with life jackets. The prompt action by the KCGS was crucial in ensuring the survival of everyone involved. The Shimoni–Pemba crossing is a vital route for traders and travelers moving between Kenya and Tanzania's Zanzibar archipelago. It is common for small passenger vessels on this route to carry both passengers and cargo, which can compromise stability in turbulent conditions.
Maritime safety has been a recurring concern, with authorities consistently urging vessel operators to heed weather advisories, ensure the availability of life-saving equipment for all passengers, and avoid overloading. The Kenya Meteorological Department provides marine forecasts that small-craft operators are expected to monitor closely before setting sail. This incident underscores the importance of adhering to these guidelines to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The successful rescue operation highlights the dedication of KCGS personnel to safeguarding lives at sea and their ability to respond promptly to maritime emergencies. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the capsizing is anticipated to be conducted by the relevant maritime authorities, aiming to enhance safety measures and prevent future incidents.
